Heavy drinking occasions in relation to ischaemic heart disease mortality-- an 11-22 year follow-up of the 1984 and 1995 US National Alcohol Surveys

Heavy users of alcohol may be prone to die prematurely from ischemic heart disease.

This study explored how alcohol drinking can affect an individual's risk of dying from ischemic heart disease (IHD). Researchers monitored the rate of alcohol use and mortality records in a cohort of nearly 10,000 US men and women over a 22-year period.

Researchers observed that high consumers of alcohol faced increased risk of dying from ischemic heart disease. The results of this study suggest that heavy ingestion of alcohol may contribute significantly to the high number of deaths from ischemic heart disease.
