The dietary inflammatory index and new-onset hypertension in Chinese adults: a nationwide cohort study
Preference for pro-inflammatory foods may set the stage for the onset of hypertension in men and women.
This study assessed the consumption of pro-inflammatory foods in relation to the development of hypertension. With the aid of validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers collated and reviewed the inflammatory potential of the diets of 10,694 Chinese men and women. The blood pressures of all the participants were regularly measured throughout the course of this study.
Researchers discovered that avid consumers of pro-inflammatory foods faced increased risk of suffering from hypertension. This study concluded that "reducing the inflammatory potential of the diet is an effective strategy to prevent hypertension in Chinese adults."
