Plant-Based Diets and Risk of Multimorbidity: The Health and Retirement Study

Consistent consumption of healthy plant foods may help shield middle-aged and older adults from different chronic diseases.

This study was carried out to ascertain the nexus between consuming plant-based diets and the tendency of middle-aged and elderly individuals to come down with different chronic diseases. Researchers followed the nutritional habits and health of 4,262 adults above the age of 50 years over a 7-year period. 

Researchers found a favorable association between adhering to a healthy plant-based diet and reduced incidence of chronic diseases in the study population. This 2024 study documented that imbibing the habit of eating healthy plant foods may confer middle-aged and older adults with significant protection against chronic diseases.
