Ultra-processed foods and the incidence of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes among Iranian adults: the Tehran lipid and glucose study

High dietary ingestion of ultra-processed foods may trigger the onset of prediabetes in men and women.

This study estimated the risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in a study population comprising of 4,411 Iranian men and women based on their level of consumption of ultra-processed foods. Researchers followed all the participants for a period of 7 years. 

A 10% increase in rate of consumption of ultra-processed foods was found to raise the risk of prediabetes by 12% in this study. Based on the data from this study, it can safely be concluded that elevated intake of ultra-processed foods may contribute to the rising incidence of prediabetes globally.
