Dietary Antioxidant Intake and Human Papillomavirus Infection: Evidence from a Cross-Sectional Study in Italy

Diets that encourage the consumption of antioxidant-containing foods may help shield women from acquiring high risk human papillomavirus infection.

High risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a major predisposing factor for cervical cancer. This research work explored the relationship between a woman's preference for foods high in antioxidants and her probability of contracting high risk HPV infection. Researchers studied the diets 251 Italian women who underwent DNA testing for HPV infection.

Researchers noted that women who ate the highest amounts of antioxidant-rich foods had the lowest risk of suffering from high risk HPV infection. The results of this study showed that adopting a high antioxidant diet may strengthen a woman's defenses to fight off high risk HPV infection.
