Legume Consumption and Blood Pressure Control in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension: Cross-Sectional Findings from the TOSCA.IT Study

Generous consumption of legumes may help to sustain blood pressure values within normal range in diabetic and hypertensive patients.

This study looked at the effect of eating a high legume diet on blood pressure control in hypertensive and diabetic patients. Researchers matched legume consumption rate with blood pressure values in a study population comprising of 1,897 diabetic and hypertensive patients. 

Researchers discovered that consistent ingestion of 3 servings of legumes per week helped to maintain blood pressure numbers within a healthy range in diabetic and hypertensive patients. The data from this study showed that a high legume diet is essential for achieving optimal blood pressure control in diabetic and hypertensive patients.
