Whole grain intake, diet quality and risk factors of chronic diseases: results from a population-based study in Finnish adults

Consuming ample amounts of whole grains may be beneficial for lowering an individual's risk of coming down with a chronic disease.

This study explored how eating whole grains can influence different factors that promote the development of chronic diseases. A total of 5,094 men and women from Finland volunteered for this study, provided information about their dietary preferences, and were assessed for risk factors for chronic diseases, such as body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, and waist circumference.

Researchers found a strong connection between devout consumption of whole grains, healthier body mass index, blood levels of cholesterol, and waist circumference, and increased protection against chronic diseases. This study suggested that individuals who want to cut down their odds of acquiring a chronic disease should create more space for whole grains in their menu.
