Phytochemical consumption and the risk of teratozoospermia: findings from a hospital-based case-control study in China

Teratozoospermia is less likely to affect men who regularly consumed high amounts of foods packed with phytochemicals.

Teratozoospermia referred to abnormal sperm morphology (shape) that can reduce a sperm's chances of fertilizing an egg. This study ascertained the link between high dietary exposure to phytochemicals and a man's odds of suffering from teratozoospermia. Using dietary questionnaires, researchers assessed the nutritional status of 146 Chinese men diagnosed with teratozoospermia and 508 males with normal sperm parameters.

Researchers found out that a man's risk of suffering from teratozoospermia moved in the downward direction with increase in the level of consumption of foods high in phytochemicals, such as lutein, carotenes, campestanol, retinol, and zeaxanthin. This 2023 study documented that consistent consumption of foods rich in phytochemicals may help prevent teratozoospermia in men.
