A significant decline in total mortality risk is associated with consistent consumption of diets high in fruits and vegetables.
This study looked at the effect of long-term consumption of fruits and vegetables (FV) on total mortality risk. More than 19,000 Chinese men and women provided information about their dietary habits and a total of 1,409 deaths were recorded during the course of the study.
After a follow-up period of 14 years, researchers observed that high dietary ingestion of fruits and vegetables correlated with lower total mortality risk. "Our findings support recommendations to increase the intake of FV to promote overall longevity," the authors concluded.
