A prospective study of carotenoid intake and risk of cataract extraction in US men.

Increased dietary exposure to lutein and zeaxanthin may help fight off cataract formation in men.

This study assessed how frequent consumption of foods high in carotenoids affects a man's risk of suffering from cataracts. Researchers surveyed more than 35,000 US men aged 45-75 years for a period of 8 years. A total of 840 participants had cataracts during the duration of the study.

Researchers noticed that participants who consumed the most amounts of foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, such as broccoli and spinach, were 19% less likely to develop cataracts compared to their counterparts who ate lesser quantities of these foods. This study supports the notion that eating generous portions of foods containing lutein and zeaxanthin is tied to lower risk of cataract in men.
