Diet-derived circulating antioxidants and risk of inflammatory bowel disease: a Mendelian randomization study and meta-analysis

Keen consumption of foods ladened with the antioxidant retinol may help lessen an individual's risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

This study investigated the correlation between the intake of antioxidant-rich foods and the likelihood of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using a meta-analytic approach. Researchers compiled data and evidence extracted from more than 1 million men and women.

Researchers noted that devout eaters of retinol-containing foods enjoyed marked reduction in inflammatory bowel disease risk, particularly ulcerative colitis. This study demonstrated that likeness for foods high in retinol may help strengthen an individual's defenses against inflammatory bowel disease.
