A decline in the risk of type 2 diabetes is associated with high consumption of magnesium-rich foods, such as nuts, beans, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables.
This research work was carried out to determine the relationship between the intake of magnesium and type 2 diabetes risk. Researchers reviewed data obtained from 7 cohort studies that examined 297,580 subjects. They observed a low incidence of type 2 diabetes among subjects who regularly consumed large quantities of magnesium both from natural sources, such as nuts, beans, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables and foods and supplements combined. The findings of this meta-analysis support recommendations to promote the incorporation of magnesium-rich foods, such as nuts, beans, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables, in the diet in order to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
