Lignan Intake and Type 2 Diabetes Incidence Among US Men and Women

High dietary ingestion of lignans from plant foods may boost an individual's odds of staying free from type 2 diabetes.

This research work compared the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in men and women according to their level of consumption of lignans from food sources. Researchers studied 201,111 US men and women with regards to their eating habits and type 2 diabetes diagnosis status.

Researchers noted that elevated intake of lignans present in plant foods brightened a participant's chances of evading type 2 diabetes. "This cohort study found that long-term lignan consumption was associated with a lower T2D risk, particularly among individuals with obesity and premenopausal women."
