Prebiotics and the Risk of Upper Digestive Tract and Stomach Cancers: The PrebiotiCa Study

Filling our plates with plant foods loaded with the prebiotic fiber raffinose may boost our chances of warding off stomach cancer.

This study explored the link between high dietary ingestion of prebiotic fiber and the occurrence of cancerous cells and tumors in the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and stomach. More than 5,000 persons enrolled for this study and provided information about their food choices and cancer diagnosis status.

Researchers noticed that increased intake of plant foods rich in the prebiotic fiber raffinose diminished the risk of developing stomach cancer. The results of this study showed that regular consumption of raffinose-containing plant foods may help thwart the development of stomach cancer.
