Important food sources of fructose-containing sugars and incident gout: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Preference for fructose-containing beverages, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, may drive up gout risk in men and women.

This study utilized a meta-analytic approach to investigate the link between high dietary ingestion of fructose-sweetened beverages, such as sugar-sweetened drinks and processed fruit juices, and the occurrence of gout. Researchers analyzed data and evidence obtained from a pool of 3 studies that examined more than 1.5 million men and women.

Researchers noted the higher the frequency and amounts of fructose-sweetened beverages, especially sugar-sweetened beverages, participants consumed, the greater their chances of developing gout. This study demonstrated that generous drinking of fructose-containing beverages may propel an individual on the path to developing gout.
