Association Between Lifetime Marijuana Use and Cognitive Function in Middle Age: CARDIA Study

Regular use of marijuana during adolescence and young adulthood may lead to a decline in cognitive function in midlife.

This study looked at the impact of long-term use of marijuana on cognitive function in middle-aged individuals. A total of 5,115 men and women took part in this study and their marijuana smoking habits and cognitive performance were assessed over a 25-year period.

Researchers discovered that the use of marijuana during adolescence and young adulthood heightened the risk of suffering from cognitive impairment in middle age. This study strengthened the evidence that repeated exposure to marijuana for a long time may have a detrimental effect on cognitive function in middle-aged men and women.
