Cannabis Use Predicts Risks of Heart Failure and Cerebrovascular Accidents: Results From the National Inpatient Sample

Cannabis use may precipitate the onset of stroke and cardiovascular ailments, such as hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease (CAD), and sudden cardiac death.

​This study assessed the use of cannabis in relation to the subsequent development of cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular accident (stroke). Cannabis usage habits and incidence of stroke and cardiovascular disease were obtained from the 2009-2010 US National Inpatient Sample database. 

Researchers noticed that cannabis users had a high tendency to suffer from stroke and cardiovascular ailments, such as hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease (CAD), and sudden cardiac death. This study suggests that cannabis use might be a risk factor for stroke and cardiovascular disease.
