Consumption of red meat, genetic susceptibility, and risk of LADA and type 2 diabetes

Devout consumption of processed red meat may facilitate the development of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, especially in those who are genetically susceptible to the disease.

​This study explored the intake of a meaty diet and its association with the development of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Researchers analyzed the diets of 1,993 patients with LADA and T2DM and another 1,789 persons without both diseases.

Researchers noted that participants who ate at least one serving of processed red meat per day had a 27% increase in the risk of suffering from LADA, especially in those with family history of the disease. This study strengthens the body of evidence linking processed red meat consumption to the development of LADA in men and women.
