Higher Ultra-Processed Food Consumption Is Associated with Increased Risk of Incident Coronary Artery Disease in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study

Upping the intake of ultra-processed foods can heighten an individual's risk of developing coronary artery disease.

​This study assessed the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in men and women based on the frequency of consumption of ultra-processed foods. A total of 2,006 out of the 13,548 adults who provided dietary and health information for this study was diagnosed with coronary artery disease over a period of 27 years.

Researchers noticed that the odds of developing coronary artery disease were stacked against habitual eaters of ultra-processed foods. The data from this study suggest that individuals can raise their chances of having coronary artery disease by adding more ultra-processed foods to their diets.
