Regular consumption of allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic, may confer significant protection against stomach cancer.
This study assessed the dietary intake of allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic, in relation to the prevention of stomach cancer. Researchers evaluated dietary and clinical data obtained from interviews with 564 stomach cancer patients and 1,131 healthy subjects living in a Chinese region with high prevalence of stomach cancer.
Researchers observed that subjects who consumed the highest amounts of allium vegetables had lower stomach cancer risk than those who did not or seldomly ate allium vegetables. According to this study, high intake of allium vegetables decreased the odds of developing stomach cancer by 40%. The findings of this study provide evidence that generous intake of diets rich in allium vegetables may reduce an individual’s susceptibility to the development of stomach cancer.
