Association between Dietary Inflammatory Index and Risk of Colorectal Adenomatous Polyps in Kashgar Prefecture of Xinjiang, China

Indulgence in pro-inflammatory foods may trigger the growth and spread of adenomatous polyps in the colon.

This study provided evidence linking avid intake of pro-inflammatory diets with the formation of adenomatous polyps in the colon. With the aid of validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers analyzed dietary data obtained from 244 Chinese men and women. The presence of colonic adenomatous polyps in each participant was assessed through colonoscopy.

Researchers noticed that colonic adenomatous polyps occurred at a high rate among participants at the top of the pro-inflammatory food consumption ladder. This study showed that eating pro-inflammatory foods on a regular basis may spur the development of adenomatous polyps in the colon.
